What Is Pre-Production?
Pre-production is the planning phase of a video project that occurs before filming begins — covering scripting, storyboarding, casting, location scouting, scheduling, and equipment planning.
Pre-production is where good videos are made. Production is where they’re captured. Post-production is where they’re finished.
Most production problems trace back to insufficient pre-production — wrong locations, unclear message, missing B-roll, talent who weren’t prepared. All of these are solvable before the camera rolls. None of them are solvable after.
What Pre-Production Includes
- Creative brief / strategy brief — who is this for, what should they think or feel or do?
- Script or interview guide — what will be said on camera?
- Shot list — what footage needs to be captured?
- Location scouting — where will we film, and what are the logistics?
- Talent prep — who’s on camera, and how are they prepared?
- Equipment and crew planning — what do we need, and who’s doing what?
The ROI of Pre-Production
An extra day of pre-production can save two days of reshooting. It’s always the most valuable investment in a video project.
How Boonrise Approaches This
Strategy comes before production. Every Boonrise project starts with understanding your audience, your message, and what success looks like — so that this concept works in service of your goals, not the other way around.
